Do Dogs have a Sixth Sense?

Can they detect earthquakes?

What do you think?

I was reading an article today about the Haiti Earthquake and it was devastating to say the least. Who knows how many people have died and are missing under the rubble of toppled buildings? During my search for more information on this tragedy, I found a video claiming a dog burst out of an office building in California’s recent 6.6 earthquake. Seconds before the tremor arrived, you can see the dog bolt across the room. After reading and seeing the video again, the dog actually ran to find its’ owner in a nearby office specifically to warn her. This prompted me to think about “Do dogs have a sixth sense?” I thought to myself this would be an interesting topic to explore as so many of us are dog lovers and can probably shed some light on the matter with all the combined experiences out there.

Now this video clearly shows how the dog bolted out of the office building before the tremor was actually caught on camera but it wasn’t like 5 minutes before or more. It may have been only seconds and due to the dogs extremely well designed sensory perceptions, it may have just felt it seconds before humans did. I know it has something to do with the P waves that go out from the epicenter before the S waves which is what actually causes the damage.

So the dog did sense something. Dogs have extraordinary senses as we all know. Eyesight is acute with great peripheral vision. Smell is probably the best around and we could probably not imagine what it may feel like. I can only describe it as the following: Imagine you cook a steak and seasoning it with a variety of things. We can make out the great smell of the steak but dogs can smell the individual ingredients. Maybe it is a poor analogy but I think you get the idea. Imagine they can smell things from far away and can distinguish so minute things that they are used to sniff out drugs and explosives.

The sense of touch is also very good and so is the hearing. They can detect the different types of engines even if it is from the same model of automobile. That is how unique their hearing is. So now that we have covered the senses of these wonderful animals, do they have a sixth sense or is it the combination of their acute senses that make it look like they have that eluding sixth sense we often talk about.

I have heard and read stories about dogs being lost on vacation by their owners and somehow months later the dog shows up at the doorsteps of their home. How can you explain this? Being hundred or maybe a thousand miles away and they find their way home? I have heard stories that a dog sensed his owner was in danger while the dog was home alone (caught on camera) and the owner was involved in a car accident. How dogs anticipate their owners coming home minutes before they actually arrive. Do they have a perception of time based on their surrounding? I really don’t know but it is fascinating to hear these stories.

We know that dogs can sense illness, especially in their owners, moods, and even heard of them sensing a cancer growth in the body, much like dolphins have been known to detect . What is it about dogs that make them so special? Is it really a sixth sense or just that they are so attuned to their surroundings, nature and there five senses that they can extrapolate and react to these conditions or circumstances?

Scientist s are at odds about dog’s sixth sense. Many agree that the acute sensory perceptions make it look like they do indeed have a sixth sense. Others claim that they employ a special bond with their human owners and can sense beyond time and distance. Whatever you believe depends on your experience but stories abound about special characteristic and abilities of both dogs and cats. How dogs have saved the lives of families when fire has broken out. Tornadoes and earthquakes are more natural disasters that they seem to sense just before they happen.

Dogs are man’s best friend, or so they say. It may well be that they may becomes man’s lifesaver. These are fine animals that become members of our families, give unconditional love and devotion. We may very well be in sync with them and one day we will know if they do really have a sixth sense.

Tom, thanks for coming by. I am a dog lover and have two right now. They are fantastic and can tell you a few stories too about some reactions I have seen with them. It does make me wonder if they do have a 6th sense.

Dogs must have some sense, I have heard of these type

events before. Speaking of sense, it would be nice if the people of this great country found the one 'sense' they seem to have lost along the road to FREE(dumb), in case you forgot it used to be called 'common sense'! I am sure some of our dumbed down fellow Americans think I mispelled that word, but folks it is not spelled 'common cents'!

GA, thanks for coming by today. I get your pain as I share in it myself. Hopefully the nation as a whole will wake up to common sense and do something about it collectively.

Dogs seem to know good from bad, we should learn from them.

ehern - thank you for asking those very pertinent questions. We had a slight earthquake a few months ago and our dogs were unusually skittish and uneasy. And when any one of us is ill, they come and lie next to us, sometimes for a long time, almost as though they were drawing the illness away. I'm sure they have sixth sense - more than that, maybe they are just blessed with sense!

Shalini, thanks for your comment. Dogs are so attuned to the behavior and mood of their owners that they react the way they do. The are truly special.

This was a fascinating read, ehern33. I think that they do. Animals are much more attuned to nature than us humans. For instance, minutes before the Tsunami struck Asia, animals of all species began fleeing, including domesticated animals and livestock, aviary, and rodents. How is this explained as well? Why the heck don't we have such acute senses? I think that dogs have a extrasensory skills, especially to their owners/masters.

What a great read! Thank you for sharing this.

ehern33 profile image

Dohn, in my research I read that dogs servived at an extrordinary level during the tsunami and that was never scientifically explained. basically saying the same thing you just commented on. I have two and they sense strange things that I can not explain. Thanks for reading.

Ehern, this is a fantastic hub. Very interesting. Dogs are very special and do sense things for sure but I don't know if it is actually a 6th sense. It is an enigma, but it whatever you call it, it makes them extremely special.

ehern33 profile image

Pamela, thanks again for reading. I really can't say but I bet it has to do with the acute sense they have and how tuned they are to their environment and owners. They are wonderful animals and I have always had them in pairs.. LOL I got a real bad cold/fly just before the holidays one of them basically stayed by my bed side and followed me around the house always looking at me. When I fell asleep she would get on her hind legs and look at me to see if I was still there and Ok. Apparently she didn't know she was waking me up, or maybe just wanted to wake me up. I don't know but the gesture is awesome.

The wonders of dogs, they are simply amazing. As to a 6th sense or just heightened awareness I can't say, but it doesn't matter. I have between my 3 Rottweilers and additional dogs up to 13 at times from people abandoning them on the dirt roads. I have seen dogs of high intelligence to some that are kinda stupid. I have seen them do amazing things and it is fun to watch a dog grow. If you spend quality time with them most are capable of tuning in to your moods and well being as well as sense a persons personality, as good or bad. My Rotties are big babies and defy the reputation of being a mean spirited dog. I see them back away from people and the hair on their back stand up, they sense a presence in some that generally pans out to just what I end up thinking after a short discourse with these people and don't want them around, they are faster at detecting personalities. I've seen them run and get a Frisbee and bring it right to a stranger, they detect a good person and want to play right away.

A good hub on a fine topic, a gift from God with the lesson of unconditional love that they give if allowed to. Many lessons to be gained from them.

50 Cal, you my friend are well attuned to your dogs. The do provide amusement sometimes and comfort at other times. Living in the city I usually don't have more than 2 at a time and many times it is a challenge to keep up with them. Always wanting to be active and looking for me to play. What a wonderful place for dogs you must have. Open space, roaming free, sounds so like a little piece of heaven on earth. Thanks for coming by today and leaving me wondering still more. LOL

They say that all God's animals have a knowing of the 'weather-predators" etc. The animals even know when a Tsnuami was coming-heading to high grounds. Interesting Hub and I would bet that Dogs do feel the same as other animals, and that dog certainly knew the Earthquake was coming!!

Love the pics of those two doggies. Can I have me one?

I have had many doggies but not at this time. I don't have enough time to be home to adequately care for a puppy, nor any place for a doggy to run, play and have fun. I wouldn't do that to a poor doggy-not fair to them. I have always been fond of Yorkies-never had one-mostly German Shepards are my favorite pets!

cvj, after the tsunami it was really incredible how many dogs survived. If that wasn't proof of their awareness, I don't know what is. The sense are so acute that we would probably be overwhelmed just by processing them. Thanks for visiting today.

ehern33 profile image

ehern33 Hub Author 2 years ago

bearclawmedia, surely can't dispute what you are saying. If it is an additional sense that evades us or just acute senses, I don't know. We tend to compare ours with animals for a basis, but by doing that we may not fully understand how fine tuned they are. Thanks for coming by.

Hi, I remember reading when the sunami hit, all the local people living in the hills ran because the animals suddenly bolted about five minutes before the earthquake. Also I saw a TV programme about a dog, playing with a ball, who suddenly looked up, ran and jumped in a river. He swan all the way around the corner, and saved a deaf and dumb man from drowning. How did he hear that? with all the water and the man not being able to speak. Amazing. I love dogs, I always call them 'higher beings' jokingly. perhaps I should'nt joke! cheers Nell

An amazing and enjoyable, enlightening hub. I so believe that dogs are far more in tune to their senses than we are, and we may well have the same abilities in the portion of our brain we don't use, it is just the dogs know how to use it. Look at those dogs who smell Cancer on people even before Doctors have diagnosed it, or what about dogs who know when their owners are going to have an epileptic fit. As for sensing Tsunami's, earthquakes etc, I guess they feel subtle vibrations etc that we cannot.

I do believe for many reasons they also have a sixth sense, and that they have an instinct to help their owners if they possibly can. I have heard of cases where an owner has died thousands of miles away from his dog, and back home the dog has sat up and let out a long howl at the moment of the death. This just has to be a sixth sense or mental connection.

ehern33 profile image

ehern33 Hub Author 2 years ago

mistyhorizon2003, thanks for your wonderful comment. There is still so much to learn from these animals and you may be right in your thinking that humans have yet to learn how to use our brains (in more ways than one) to tune in to our senses like animals do. Thanks again and for becoming a follower. Will be visiting some of your work soon.

It is amazing what dogs can sense. I know there are dogs who can sense when their owner is going to have a seizure. I had a dog once who would run to the window minutes before I came home. I know horses too have extra sensitivity to people's emotions and special needs kids do very well with horses because of this. Maybe God gave these animals these gifts to help us along the way.

Hey ehern! I absolutely love this hub, definitely rated it up ;]! Your title is very catchy and a great way of rolling in more readers, amazing!

I personally think that dogs do have a 6th sense. I have never had a dog growing up, but many of my family members have had numerous! One of them that I have grown very close to, a Jack Russel Terrior named Zeus, that I can trust and care for as if he was my own dog, could tell a storm is coming days before!

He would hide and bite at my ankles and then run in the other room! When I followed him once, he crawled under the bed, turned around and stuck his head out so I could see him! I think he was telling me to hide from the storm that was coming in a few days. He acted like this until a day after the storm stopped.

Great hub!

I don't think dog's have a sixth sense. Using your example of the earthquake, it is easily explainable with things we already know. Dogs have a much keener sense of hearing than we do, so the animal may have heard it coming.

ehern - I rather think that a sixth sense is not something that only dogs have. Do the Chinese not rely upon animals of all sorts to warn them of earthquakes? I also suspect that us humans also have a sixth sense, albeit perhaps dulled by our modern lifestyles. Still, who has not felt a frission of fear prior to something terrible happening? A reasonably common experience, I suspect?

nice hub! it's so interesting about dogs and animals sensing danger. I read somewhere recently that part of it could be because animals are so attuned to the 'now'. they are totally tuned in and not daydreaming about the past or worrying about the future. if humans didn't get so distracted with our zillions of thoughts, we could probably sense these things ourselves.

but most humans aren't attuned to nature like animals are.

our dog goes and sits by the front window when it's almost time for my son to come home, it's so amazing, they just know. I've had dogs all of my life and I can't even imagine living without one. they are wonderful, smart, sweet companions. thanks for such a great hub! :]

Of course dogs have a sixth sense which is why they are used for people who have seizures, and other medical issues which give notice in what we call an aura. The dog warns their owner and they can then quickly take medication to stop the seizure or episode they would have had. Insurance companies even pay for the placement of the dog on numerous occasions to prevent future expenses.

What I think most people don't realize is that we all have a "sixth sense" and numerous other assets that we never embrace except in emergencies. Some good examples are when we have that "gut feeling" not to do something or other assets when a single man lifts a car off a child or loved one. Is he nomally that strong? Of course not but for that specific moment he finds that inner strength/spirit and wahlah he is super human.

Its a shame that we do not use the abilities of dogs and other animals to their fullest extent. Instead sometimes they are abused and neglected. Great article and have a fabulous day.

Our dogs have a 6th sense, I remember when our Male Cocker was 6 months old, he kept barking and barking outside I came down the stairs went outside and asked him to stop barking. He would not I began to smell something in the air but could not tell where it was coming from, I peeked over our neighbors fence and there planter was on fire! I ran next door grabbed the hose and put it out needless to say our Cockers do not bark often but when they do I honestly pay attention. :)

ehern33 profile image

ehern33 Hub Author 2 years ago

AEvans, dogs have an instinct for potential danger. I would imagine that either the fire or smell triggered it. I can relate to this as I once had a Husky that warned us of a neighbors kitchen fire. Thankfully they were there but we had no glue until the dog warned us. We were able to go help our neighbor. Thanks for coming by today.

Yes I think dogs do. I know cats have a sixth sense though.

I have heard of this. I think dogs are smarter then we give them credit for. Humans long ago may have had this sense or similar senses, but with or advancement we lost this 'telepathic' ability.

Dang! I didn't think I was ever going to make it down here to leave a comment! Great Hub! I have three dogs, and Sheba, our old family dog is very persceptive. She knows our moods, and hears cars coming up the drive before we can even see the headlights! She growls and barks at most strangers, but never lifts an eyeball at elderly people. I put alot of stock in her!

I don't know if dogs have a sixth sense, but they definitely have some senses that are much greater than our own. Their sense of smell is many times greater than ours. Their hearing is different too. They hear higher frequencies that we aren't even aware of... I also think people highly underestimate their ability to understand things in general. Like marking the passage of time...

Dogs have a different scope for their senses than humans, different ranges of visible spectrum that the cells in their eyes are built to detect, different frequencies which they can hear and different receptors in their noses. When you combine those finely tuned features it can often appear that they have a sixth sense when in reality, they are simply detecting their surroundings a bit better than humans.

I have the sweetest dog - she loves people after she gets to know them. Except this one service guy that came to my house. She absolutely hated him. The hair on her back stood up and she actually bared her teeth at him. He kept trying to pet her and she did not want it. It turns out that her impression of him was right on - he behaved in an inappropriate manner toward me and I had to ask him to leave. She somehow sensed that he was trouble and did not want him on her turf. Next time, I'll pay more attention!

Great Hub. I'm an animal lover and Dogs are one of my favorites. I do believe dogs have a sixth sense, maybe even a seventh! Fascinating creatures. I think this so-called sixth sense borders around what we humans loosely refer to as "instinct". But there's more to it than science knows.

We had an old fashioned 'Farm Collie' who was deathly afraid of lightning storms. He could predict the strike! Many many times I would sit on our front porch with him sitting in the seat next to me (the only time he wanted to sit with me!). From our porch, we can see about 25 miles out across a valley looking to the South west, where our storms come from. From this long distance, we see it long before we hear it. On these occassions, his body would tense and tremble, then seconds later we would see the flash. Again, this happened repeatedly. He would tremble way before the lightning strike was visible. When he relaxed, I knew the storm was over.

Amazing! And we miss him!

I have noticed with my dogs that they can sense when things are not right, when someone is coming up the street or walking down our path. They spark up and bark well before we even know what is going on. I call them the automatic door bells. Dogs without a doubt have a sixth sense.

Sembj profile image

Sembj Level 1 Commenter 15 months ago

Interesting and enjoyable Hub! I suspect that what we regard as a sixth sense is really their ability to use their existing senses in a heightened manner. Their heightened sense of smell has helped them detect cancers from smelling the breath of some as well as being able to actually pinpoint some cancers in others. Scientists have often learned from animals and I suspect there's no reason not to build computers with the same ability to smell as a dog so that they can mimic these dogs' abilities whether smelling for cancers or survivors after natural disasters. Also dogs vocabularies seem to be growing all the time as we recognize just how smart and social they are. My wife and I live with our dog 24/7 and know he derives as much pleasure from our company as we do from his. I find he has sound judgment when it comes to my opinions and, most important, he is a good listener. Thanks for the stimulating article!

ehern33 profile image

ehern33 Hub Author 15 months ago

Sembj, thanks for the follow and comment. I apologize for the delay in responding. You are absolutely right. The heightened senses is amazing and when used for diagnostic purposes such as cancer, along with our modern technology, should enhance human abilities in the medical field.

Not to mention the unconditional love these animals show. If only humans could be son in tune with each other.

I have an adorable female Cocker Spaniel who has a very strange reaction to a close friend. She is happy to answer the door and greet anyone who ever knocks at the door. She loves everybody. However, we have an 18 yearold neighbor boy who she backs away from. She slightly barks and looks very anxious to sniff him. But still backs away. He loves her, and has never been anything but sweet to her. Gauranteed. She just senses something is different and tries to get our attention. I almost feel she thinks there is something wrong with him and she's worried. Anyone else have a dog who appears to have telepathic powers ?

JimA 6 weeks ago

I don't know about all the telepathic powers and everything but this morning I was watching the news (I live in Massachusetts) and having my morning coffee, when my 2 year old black lab started growling (not her normal growl that happens when someone is walking up the stairs to my door a low quiet growl). I told her nobody was there and she went in her crate and layed down. 15 minutes later I heard about an 8.7 earthquake in Indonesia. Could be a coincidence or maybe some sort of ESP. She always knows when I'm thinking about taking her outside btw, I don't even have to do anything but think it.
